THE NET OF GARDENS

What is the Net?

Vichada It is the group of Botanic Gardens legally established in Colombia.

The National Net is a non-profit association, established as a non-government organization with indefinite duration, unlimited number of members, and subject to the Colombian Law.

The National Net is made up of 21 Botanic Gardens already established, and approximately 10 more in process of creation. These Gardens are located throughout the country: in the Caribbean Region, Insular Region, Pacific Region, Andean Region, Orinoco and the Amazons. They contribute to the country’s Environmental Awareness, Maintenance, Research and Education.


 

Objectives of the NET

a) Group effectively all the Colombian Botanic Gardens, understood as the collections of plants scientifically organized, and in general all the national institutions considered as research centers of botany which have an area destined to cultivate any variety of plants aiming at conservation in situ and ex situ. These should be institutions that carry on scientific and instructional research, studies, and experimentation, and that due to their goals and activities to achieve them have been acknowledged by the scientific community as Botanic Gardens, and have processed that acknowledgment according to the current legal regulations.

b) Promote development of research in biological sciences, botany, and any related fields.

c) Cooperate with all the scientific institutions that demand help and provide experts opinion when necessary about scientific, organizational, or administrative matters regarding Botanic Gardens already established or in process of creation.

d) Cooperate with National Government’s initiatives related to the scientific aims that this Net is pursuing and act as consultant agent for its decisions.

e) Promote and participate in the analysis of problems related to preservation, use, and handling of floral resources.

f) Favor the development of courses, studies, seminars, conferences, and publications.

g) Encourage and support the development of the Botanic Gardens already established and plan and motivate the creation of new ones.

h) Develop all the activities and events that contribute to scientific and technological development, and to the conservation of the environment and especially of the native floral species in Colombia.

It is important to clarify that in order to achieve its goals and according to the Article No. 5 of its regulations, the Net encourages communication and scientific and cultural exchange with similar institutions in the country or overseas.
 
 

The Botanic Gardens

Araceae, Tuluá The mision of the Botanic Gardens in Colombia is to contribute to the awareness, preservation, appreciation, and use of the national vegetal variety through the enhancement of research, environmental education, and recreation. In this way, the quality of life in the communities may improve in harmony with nature and lead to develop citizen’s environmental consciousness.

The Botanic Gardens are collections of living plants scientifically organized which must handle herbariums and vegetal germ plasm in deposits of genes or seeds. In a regular basis, they must perform basic and applied research projects in conservation in situ and ex situ and should develop projects in education. They should use non-contaminating technologies for all their activities and must submit to the following parameters to achieve their social aims:

  1. Maintain both basic ecological processes, and systems that support all kinds of manifestations of life.
  2. Preserve genetical variety.
  3. Contribute effectively and permanently to national and regional development through research and informational duties.
  4. Ensure, within the tenets of sustainable development, that the use of floral species and natural ecosystems is carried out in such a way that it allows profit and enjoyment not only for the present, but also for the future generations of inhabitants in the Colombian territory.

Note: in situ conservation refers to that taking place in the native environment of the species, and ex situ conservation refers to that taking place out of the native environment of the species.
