Institute of hydrological, metereological and environmental studies (IDEAM)

The Institute of Hydrological, Meteorological and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) is organized as a public establishment of national character linked to the Ministry of the Environment. It has administrative autonomy, legal personality, and independent assets. It is in charge of collecting and managing the scientific and technical information on the ecosystems which make up the environmental assets of the country as well as establishing the technical basis with which to classify and partition the use of the national territory with the aim of planning and organising the country’s land use.}

The IDEAM is to obtain, analyze, study, process and divulge basic information relating to hydrology, hydrogeology, meteorology, basic geography on biophysic aspects, geomorphology, soil and vegetation for the management and use of the biophysical resources of the Nation. It will also be in charge of the establishment and functioning of national meteorological and hydrological infrastructures to provide information, predictions, warnings and advice to the community.

The Institute is responsible for carrying out the monitoring of the Nation’s biophyisical resources, specially in relation to information on pollution and degradation needed for the decision making of environmental authorities.
