Conservation biology program

General Objective

The Humboldt Institute Conservation Biology Program seeks to promote, coordinate and develop scientific research relating to the processes which allow the maintenance of biodiversity. In particular it seeks to compile, synthesize and produce scientific information relating to the factors which influence the maintenance of biodiversity and biological resources.

Specific Objectives

The different levels of biological organization are considered as diversity. These go from the genetic diversity of populations, the dynamics within species populations and their organization in ecosystems and landscapes. Special emphasis is given to the integration between different levels of biological organizations and spatial and temporal dimensions of changes induced by human action. The program looks to contribute to generate or consolidate a scientific practice directed to the understanding of real situations of loss and conservation of biodiversity.

The program works in two special areas; the threatened species subprogram which includes the making of the Colombian fauna and flora red book; and the subprogram of landscape biodiversity.
