Communication and information program

General Objective

The communication and information program seeks to design and implement strategies for the compiling, divulging and communication of scientific information on biodiversity.

Specific Objectives

  1. To divulge scientific information to contribute in generating knowledge, understanding and awareness on the importance of conservation, valuation and sustainable use of the biological resources of the country.
  2. To promote the realization of activities which tend to protect, conserve, valuate, use in a sustainable manner, recuperate or restore the biological resources of the country.

The Institute’s results may be of interest to a wide audience, including the decision makers, the scientific community, and the general public. With such an aim in mind the Institute has developed a series of divulging tools which include publications, news, audiovisuals, seminars, exhibitions, radio and television.

Additionally and with the aim of strengthening the exchange of information within the scientific community, a data base on biodiversity has been developed and a page established on the Internet. This confirms the Institute’s position as a focal point of the Clearing-House Mechanism in Colombia for the exchange of information of the Convention on Biological Diversity. All of this contributes to the design and administration of the information system on Biodiversity.

Moreover, the Institute has an Information and Documentation Center on Biodiversity, which includes reference books and national and international magazine subscriptions.

Another mechanism for the divulging of information on biodiversity is the production of audiovisual materials, which task was assigned to the Institute’s Natural History Film Unit.
