The Colombian Biodiversity Information System (SIB) is the institutional research program that is responsible for strengthening the link between investigation and decision making, based on readily available data, products, and information services that sustain effective research and education processes, and fundamentally, decision making on biodiversity. The SIB also consolidates a national network of information on biodiversity supported by a community of diverse actors (academic, environmental authorities, control entities, research and control institutions, private companies and administrative departments, among others). The program is also responsible for guaranteeing that the information generated by the other institutional programs meet shared standards and parameters.
In this way, the program structure oversees its own information management process, as well as that of its partners, and the analysis of information and the generation of information products for specific needs, the monitoring of the state of biodiversity and finally, the production and publication of related biodiversity indicators. Within these components, the SIB program oversees the administration and maintenance of biological institutional collections (specimens, sounds, tissues), the molecular biology lab and, especially the coordination of the Information System on Colombian Biodiversity (SIB). The SIB is a national alliance coordinated by the Humboldt Institute. More than 100 institutions of different sectors and interests participate in this alliance that seeks to facilitate an efficient and consistent management of information on biodiversity. It is founded on inter-institutional relations based on mutual trust and on clear participation parameters, on the national, regional and local production capacity for the interchange of information in standardized formats and appropriate documentation, on the management and publication of pertinent contents, and on the use of information technology as a point of support of all processes.
Although new to the Institute, the SIB Program has produced and published results that currently support the national network of information, such as the new Internet portal (www.siac.net.co/sib), the geospatial viewfinder, the visualization tool of indicators, and the National Record of Biological Collections.
