Policy, Legislation and Support for Decision makers

The Policy, Legislation and Support for Decision makers Program provides research on the relations between biodiversity and political, legal and socioeconomic issues and contexts, for the development and support of environmental policy and legislation. Moreover, the program concerts the efforts and research results of other research programs of the Institute in order to lay the grounds for decision making issues. To achieve this, the program relies on the capacities of a multidisciplinary team of professionals that allow for an integrated perspective on the research.

The Program has carried out research on sector issues such as biodiversity factors in the process of decision making in the transport and agriculture sector (in the case of biofuels), as well as conservation identification and mining compensation projects. In terms of biodiversity and human wellbeing, the Program has carried out research on links between biodiversity, health and food supply. In relation to the spatial dimension of biodiversity and ecosystem services, the Program has also engaged in studies on biodiversity factors in land use planning and zoning, as well as supporting regional and urban planning processes.

In addition, the Program has contributed to the revision of legal framework in various regulations for biological resources, study permits and supporting the MAVDT (MADS) in the international negotiation of accessing natural resources and the distribution of benefits, as well as in the fulfillment of national commitments with the CBD and others.

Currently, the program focuses on the existing links between biodiversity and human well-being, developing studies on the links between human health and biodiversity, as well as biodiversity and food security. These links are examined within different dimensions such as the impact that the drivers of development can have on biodiversity and the valuation of contributions of ecosystem services in relation to human well-being.
