The Deputy Director for Science focuses on the research capacity of the Institute. The main objective of the department is to make its research results relevant to decision making processes. As a response to the information demands for the projects identified by the Politics, Legislation, and decision making Support, the department coordinates processes of information construction through research programs, development of different transdisciplinary work lines, permanent dialogue spaces with the National Environmental System (Sina), the academy, some producing sectors and NGOs.
The first step has been to build a management system of biodiversity knowledge that includes the forming of a research group registered in Colciencias, called Sciences of Biodiversity (Ciencias de la Biodiversidad), with the objective of providing a scientific-political integrative framework for research in biodiversity and ecosystem issues in Colombia. This group forms part of the already existing Information System on Colombian Biodiversity whose purpose is to strengthen information integration, guaranteeing an academic focus and the production of results within the Colombian scientific community. As an operative support to this process, the scientific department coordinates the Internal Scientific Committee the External Scientific Committee (consultant), project management procedure, and together with the offices of International Cooperation and Planning, the department compiles the potential research proposals.
