The objective of this program is to coordinate, promote, and carry out comprehensive research that allows the defining of initiatives and steps aimed towards conservation and the use of biodiversity, the preservation of ecosystemic services and the ecological and evolutionary processes that sustain them.
The main contributions have been the information, processes, and initiatives produced as input for national and regional decision making. This includes environmental authorities as well as other institutions involved in the conservation of biodiversity.
Among the most significant research results are the publications of threatened species red books, national strategies for plant and bird conservation, and of the National Action Plan of Invasive Species (press). Moreover, research results are highlighted in the identification, prioritization and consolidation of protected areas, conservation initiatives (Aicas/Ibas) and the development of tools for preserving rural landscapes.
Currently, the program focuses on five prioritized areas that fall within a national and international framework:
- Biodiversity in continental aquatic systems: Advances the defining of priorities in relation to research, conservation and management of species, fishing and ornamental resources, and the diagnosing of the state of knowledge, conservation and use of wetlands in the regions of Colombia.
-
Conservation areas and ecosystem services: Develops a research and monitoring plan for the National System of Protected Areas that produce knowledge and optimizes its administration. Additionally, this area engages in ecosystem services restoration projects, as well as issues of territorial planning and land use in order to maximize resource use.
-
Species extinction prevention processes: Updates the national strategy for plant conservation, aligning it with the national and international framework, supporting the creating of a threatened species portal and formulating an agenda model for research and monitoring. Moreover, the area contributes to the updating of risk evaluations of endangered species such as birds and fish.
-
Biological invasions and its impact on biodiversity: Consolidates the national network, develops and implements analysis tools of impact risk of introduced species and the development of tools that contribute to the awareness of species vulnerable to its impact.
-
Trafficking of national and international species (Cites): The Humboldt Institute coordinates the scientific authorities that have developed tools of identification of species and support the generation of information in a way that commerce does not cause detrimental effects for wildlife species.
