There is a need to widen the base of knowledge of one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world in order to contribute to the National Inventory of Biodiversity and as a concrete proposal to respond to the Agenda of Systematic Research for the 21st Century. In 2000, the Institute called on the Invemar, ICN, and the Missouri Botanical Garden to produce Biota colombiana, as a strategy to disseminate and compile the National Inventory of Biodiversity through taxonomic groups and regions. Although the publication began as a list of species, by 2005, the publication opened its thematic spectrum to systematization and biogeography. Currently, it is the only publication of scientific nature of the Institute.
